When I think of brightness, spark, energy, self- awareness, and authenticity in our global South Asian community, I can’t help but think of the shiny example that’s been in-front of us for many years now in Lilly Singh. Lilly is an actress, an entertainer, and an author, and her Punjabi-Canadian roots are planted in a very well nurtured soil full of heritage, culture, and growing up in a South Asian immigrant household in Toronto. She also grew a huge following on Youtube as Superwoman, an extremely relatable situational and funny persona that resonated with millions across the globe. Lilly’s range as an entertainer and media personality has been broad and diverse, as an actress, comedian, brand ambassador, and activist. In 2019, she was the first person of South Asian descent to host an American major broadcast network late night talk show, and the pioneering “a Little Late.. with Lilly Singh ran for 2 seasons” on NBC. Lilly’s currently a judge on Canada’s Got Talent, she’ll be starring in the Universal animated feature “The Bad Guys” which comes out next week, and she’ll be headlining a new Disney series with Muppets! Perhaps the most in-depth mode to capture the essence of Lilly Singh has come through her books - her first book “How to be a Bawse: a Guide to Conquering Life” reached number 1 on the NY TIMES bestseller list in 2017, and her latest book “Be a Triangle: How I Went from Being Lost to Getting My Life into Shape” was recently published. Throughout it all, Lilly’s had a front row seat …to a public embrace of not only her individuality with its inclusive nature and heartfelt authenticity, but the balance of her phenomenal success with its challenges and growth opportunities. She’s also been a key protagonist in the emergence of the South Asian woman as a central figure in the American and Canadian cultural currents. We caught up for a conversation and we started by talking about the foundational aspects of being a triangle…
